Common problems with ovens

By Tony Trussol

It is highly likely that there is an oven in your home and it is also highly likely that you use this oven regularly. Most meals that taste good require an oven to repair so if your one breaks, you don't want to be stuck eating crappy food. Don't leave it for ages because you don't think you can afford the repairs, quite often you will find that it is just a small element of the oven that needs to be replaced such as the ignition on gas ovens, this can be easily repaired and won't take long to do. If you are looking into hiring an repair man to fix the oven then you want to make sure that they charge a flat-rate so that if it does take a long time to find out what the problem is and then fix it, you won't be paying through the nose for more difficult fixes.

A common problem with ovens are faulty hotplates, there are a few things that can go wrong with these and the problem could be down to something as simple as faulty wiring or a broken thermostat, more commonly however it is because of a burnt out heating element. This should mean that your oven still works but the hotplate doesn't, if this is the case then the fix shouldn't be too hard and wouldn't cost a lot to replace the parts.

More of a cosmetic issue with ovens can be that the interior light isn't working, this means that you can't see whatever you're cooking looks like so you don't know if it is burning without opening the door and letting the heat out. This problem could be fixed by simply replacing the bulb in the oven however it is unlikely that the bulb fitting will be easy to find or figure out if you don't have the oven manual. The issue could also be with the wiring though so let a professional check it out.

Faulty thermostats can be a big issue with ovens as this is what is used to measure the temperature within the oven. Therefore if this element is broke then the oven may not know which temperature to climb to or may not work at all. This is a key element and should therefore be replaced immediately if this is the problem.

Other cosmetic oven repair problems include replacement handles and door hinges that have been broke due to wear and tear or just a plain old accident. Either way you can probably find a replacement for it, just remember to note the make of your oven in case the repair technician needs to know which parts to order.

A lot of repair specialists have websites detailing their services making oven repairs simpler. Don't put cooker repairs off because of the price because it may be cheaper than you expected.
