Signs You May Need Electrical Repair

Electrical RepairElectrical issues are usually the most difficult for do-it-yourselfers. Given the potential danger this is understandable. No one should attempt to do electricl repairs if they are not absolutely sure of what they are doing. And remember the most important thing to do first: TURN OFF THE POWER.

For those with a little bit of knowledge about electricity and wiring, it may be possible to tackle some of the simpler repair projects. Most people will need to rely on the help of a professional. Still, is helpful to understand the signs or symptoms of the typical electrical problems.

First, make sure you know where the electrical panel is located in your house. Sometimes a breaker is thrown and needs to be reset. This is also where you can shut down the power to outlets, appliances, light fixtures, etc.... Obviously, if you see or smell smoke around the elecrical panel, call someone right away. If the electrical panel is putting off excessive heat, that is also the sign of a problem.

Here are some additional signs of potential electrical problems:

  • Sparking when a plug is inserted or removed from an outlet.
  • Hot or warm electrical cords.
  • Lights flickering or dimming for no apparent reason or when an appliance is turned on. (Could be a bad connection or circuit.)
  • Light bulbs burning out frequently.
  • Fuses burning out often.
  • Circuit breaker tripping repeatedly.

If you notice any of these issues, it is likely the symptom of a more serious problem and should not be ignored. Some of these things can be addressed by a homeowner but again, only if you know what you are doing. Even then it might be worth a second opinion. Mistakes made with electricity can be fatal.
