Guidelines for Deciding upon New Doors

By Anrinal Gazelle

Ultimately there are three different types of windows and doors you can have installed in your home, each defined by the type of material from which their made. The various materials have their own benefits and downsides, and for the most part it's a matter of preference and design matching to the architecture of the home.

Vinyl - A great deal of new homes and remodels are seeing the use of vinyl doors and windows as well as similar materials (like fiberglass). The major benefit to vinyl windows and doors is the excellent insulating properties; vinyl doesn't conduct heat or cold as easily as other materials. While vinyl can't be painted, it is manufactured in a variety of colors so it's easy to find a door or vinyl window that will fit your concept. The cost of vinyl windows and doors can vary quite a bit so it's important to pay close attention to the finish as well as the joints of the frames.

Aluminum - Aluminum and other types of metal windows and doors enjoy much more popularity in warmer areas of the country where insulating properties just aren't as important. Aluminum does not have the insulating capabilities of vinyl but many designs do have heat breaks to prevent excessive heat transfer which do a significant job of it. With metal though, its strength and versatility are its greatest assets. The properties of the metal make them stand up very well to the test of time and retain its aesthetics and function as the years wear on.

Wood - Traditionally doors were all made of wood if you go back far enough. Wood doesn't have quite the popularity or common usage that it enjoyed in the past. More than half the frames manufactured today are made of other materials than wood. Wood is a good insulator against the elements but unless they are properly sealed, protected and maintained they can be susceptible to rot and and insect damage.

Custom Vs. Stock - Your windows might have been measured out with stock sizes from the get go but chances are, with many homes that the windows have been customized to make them fit the home better. Whatever material you decide on, it is easy to get custom fit windows that will work well with your homes design and fit your d?cor. Custom windows are an excellent choice for an older home that you want to bring into the modern era.

It doesn't really matter what material you choose. You don't want to base your decision on nothing but price alone. You really need to take all of the benefits and costs into consideration as well as its aesthetic considerations. When you take everything into consideration it will be a lot more clear which is the better option even if the price isn't the least of all of them.
