Plumbing Repair - The Garbage Disposal

Most of you have garbage disposals in your kitchen. Garbage disposals are usually mounted beneath a sink where it pulverizes the garbage and discharges it into the sewer system. A garbage disposal is very useful in a household, but because most people don’t know how to use it properly, it usually gets abused and breaks down way before its time. Knowing plumbing repair for garbage disposals is important if you want to keep these things working for a long time.

The common mistakes people make when using their garbage disposal are the following: overloading it, running it dry, over-greasing it and dumping in it the wrong stuff. If you do these things, then your garbage disposal will really need some plumbing repair. Don’t throw too much stuff in your garbage disposal all at once, as this can burn out the motor. You should also have cold water running while using the garbage disposal to keep it from overheating. Also, large, solid matter, eggshells and fibrous foods like chives, carrot and celery shouldn’t be thrown down the garbage disposal, as these can cause clogs. You also shouldn’t dump animal fat in the garbage disposal, as this causes over-greasing. Over-greasing happens when the animal fat you’ve thrown down has congealed and clogged up the blades. All of these can spell trouble for your garbage disposal.

If you feel that your garbage disposal is overloaded, press the reset button after it cools down. If your disposal won’t turn on, you may have tripped your circuit or have a faulty switch. Just fix the circuits and turn your garbage disposal on once again. If the disposal is making a sound but it still won’t run, something inside may be jammed. Just release the jam inside with the help of a crank and flywheel.

To maintain your garbage disposal, you can grind up ice cubes or lemon peel on it. It’s also highly recommended to clean your garbage disposal with baking soda and a few cups of vinegar at least once a month. This will help get rid of odor and dirt.

The garbage disposal is very important to every household, thus you should never abuse it. The plumbing repair of a garbage disposal should be done properly and regularly to avoid encountering problem. If your garbage disposal won’t turn on anymore, you may need to call a professional or buy a new garbage disposal.
